Melvin J. Horst

Melvin J. Horst, a beacon of gentleness and love, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2024, at the age of 84. He was born on September 12, 1939, in Lebanon, PA, and through the years, his warmth and handiness would enrich the lives of all who knew him.

Melvin was the loving husband of Lois Horst for an admirable 61 years, creating a lifetime of memories and a family founded on boundless affection and support. He was a devoted father to his children, Tim Horst and his wife Laurie, Marcia Thiess and her husband Mark, and Beth Wax and her husband Jim. He carried his love into the next generation as the cherished pop-pop to Heather and her husband Justin, Ashley, Jonathan and his wife Rachel, David and his wife Amanda, Carlee and her husband Josh, Zachary, and Jordan and his wife Valerie. Melvin also delighted in the laughter and joy of his great-grandchildren, Riley, Colton, Hunter, Evelyn, and Gwenyth, sharing with them the same gentle spirit that he had offered to everyone around him throughout his life.

After 31 years of dedicated service to the Federal Government, Melvin retired and became the family’s own “McGuiver”; a man whose Mr. Fix-it abilities were renowned. Whether tinkering in his workshop or building a wooden boat, comfort was found in the hum of his industrious spirit. Family trips to Disney World with the grandchildren glowed with the magic of Melvin’s love for adventure and play. A fan of the Ravens and Orioles, his gentle presence was a familiar sight on game days. Melvin's appreciation for history was captured in the books he cherished and the local newspaper articles he perused daily. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, embracing the quiet beauty of nature.

Melvin J. Horst will be deeply missed, yet his legacy of love, practicality, and kindness will continue to resonate within the hearts of his family and the many friends he made over his enriching lifetime. His memory remains a treasure, inspiring all who had the privilege to know him.

Family and friends will honor and celebrate Melvin's life at the family owned Evans Life Celebration Home -8800 Harford Road, Parkville MD 21234, on Wednesday, March 20th 2024, for a visitation from 2-4 and 6-8PM. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 21st 2024,10AM at Evans. Interment to follow at Parkwood Cemetery.
